McDowell County Health Coalition History

An organizational meeting was held in June 15, 2005, attended by community members, agencies and organizations. At this meeting, a steering committee was organized to host a Community Health Summit in April 2006. At the Community Health Summit, the results of the 2004 McDowell County Community Health Assessment were presented to a diverse group of citizens. The community agreed that the health concerns faced by our county would be most effectively addressed by working together and directing our efforts in a coordinated manner.

Unnatural Causes sounds the alarm about America's glaring socio-economic and racial inequities in health - and searches for root causes. The documentary series (for PBS broadcast and DVD release) sifts through the evidence to discover there is more to our health than bad habits, health care, or unlucky genes. The social conditions in which we are born, live and work profoundly effect our health and longevity.
