1. In order to secure the active involvement of the priority population(s), our Partnership will:

Recruit low income, Latino, rural parents of kids with 95th percentile to action team, or regularly checking with these folks about planning and implementation via presentations to target school PTO meetings.

 

Progress to Date:  School nurses are meeting with parents of obese students

2. Marketing/Communication activities related to this community objective:

á                Nutrition Displays at PTO meetings in each elementary school

á                Booklet with school nutrition policy survey results will be disseminated to school staff

á                School Nurses will write letters to parents of students with screening  results from student health fairs.  StudentsÕ BMI will be included.

á                School nurses will include referral information to parents for students who are above the 95th BMI percentile.

á                School nurses will communicate with parents about resources available for students with BMI above 95th percentile and try to set up a meeting with a registered dietitian

á                Nutrition education on cafeteria bulletin boards

á                Provide school gardens training to interested elementary school teachers

á       Presented obesity statistics and 6ht Grade BMI results to Board of Health, School Health Advisory Council, McDowell County Health Summit, Child Health Summit

á       Newspaper articles about obesity in McDowell Newspaper

á       McDowell SchoolÕs Student, Staff, Parent Survey completed in January 2006 n=880 about attitudes towards food policies and physical activity and nutrition behaviors and presented to School Health Advisory Council

á       Information presented at Child Health Summit for School Staff and area agencies on 1/26/2007

á       McDowell Obesity, Physical Activity and Nutrition Action Team organized in May 2006 and wrote Eat Smart Move More ÒSeeds of Change Grant and received $18,300

3. Intervention: BMI screening; school nurses refer families of elementary students whose BMI > 95th percentile to meet with a dietitian and YMCA fitness consultant

Lead agency:

á       School nurses and health department staff collect BMI data.  School nurses make referrals.

Other agencies:

á       NC DHHS PAN branch provided form for BMI screening.

á       Head Start collects BMI data on kindergarteners.

á       Health Department collects BMI on kindergartners

á       YMCA staff will issue an prescription for physical activity by providing physical assessments and counseling parents and their children on how to be more physically active and where those opportunities are in McDowell County.

á       Registered dietitian will counsel families and >95%BMI students to manage childÕs weight, eat healthier and track their progress

á       Registered dietitian, school nurses and families will work together to improve childÕs eating and increase physical activity

á       Baxter International Grant will fund consultations with registered dietitian and YMCA staff

á       Health Department Health Educator will provide/facilitate educational programs for target audience

4. Intervention: Promoting active community environment by creating a greenway including canoe launch sites along the Catawba River and writing a pedestrian plan

Setting: community

Start Date - End Date: 10/2005 - 12/2010

Lead agency:

á       McDowell Trails Association secured donation of land from personal owner to City of Marion, applied for grant for canoe put-in on county land, wrote greenway master plan, displayed plans at local festivals and presents to local groups.

Other agencies:

á       City of Marion, City of Old Fort, and McDowell county government each developing a greenway and bicycle plan.

á       McGill Associates prepared feasibility study.

á       Chamber of Commerce, City of Marion, local surveyor, and private residents contributed funds towards greenway development.

á       Nature Conservancy negotiating with private landowners for access to greenway.

á       Presentations about greenway made to 15 civic groups and at 5 community festivals.

á       McDowell Trails Association incorporated as nonprofit.

á       Applied for Fit Together grant (did not receive it).

á       Feasibility study completed, and topographical survey of 1.5 mile greenway nearly completed.

á       Applied for a NCDNR 2007-08 Adopt a Trail Grant  (pending)

á       McDowell Trails Association took 1 county commissioner and their board members on a canoe trip to see proposed greenway and ÒbluewayÓ firsthand

5. Intervention:  Create gardens in one elementary school and three pre-K/ daycare sites.

Lead agency:

á       Health department wrote Eat Smart Move More grant and partnered with school who wrote Baxter International grant.

Other agencies:

á       State Eat Smart Move More and Baxter Foundation provided grants.

á       Children Services Network recruited daycares for garden project

á       Children Services Network will provide training to daycare staff.

á       Eat Smart Move More NC Local Program Coordinator will facilitate training for elementary teachers, provide resources on school gardening and nutrition education

á       McDowell Obesity, Physical Activity and Nutrition Action Team (McOPANAT) will develop an evaluation tool to determine the impact of garden programming on fruit and vegetable consumption

á       Eat Smart Move More NC local program coordinator & Children Services Network will provide training healthy snacks and provide menu consultations by a registered dietitian

á       Head Start will provide annual training in nutrition to staff

á       Health department provide training, funding from  Baxter Foundation grant in Partnership with the McDowell County Schools. 

Other agencies:

á       Schools offering CEUs, location for training.

á       Eat Smart Move More Local Program Coordinator  and Registered Dietitian will train teachers in Food For Thought Curriculum

8. Intervention: Provide kits with nutritional teaching/ visual aids & videos, as well as ÒFood for ThoughtÓ curriculum (all grade levels) for all elementary school libraries.

á       Health department facilitates training, printing curriculum, assembling kits.

á       McDowell County Schools will oversee funding from Baxter Foundation grant.

á       Baxter International grant will fund the nutrition kits, video libraries and other training materials

á       School libraries cataloging/ keeping track of nutritional kits & videos.

9.  Intervention:  Provide training to school staff that will increase studentsÕ physical activity.

Start Date – End Date: 01/2007-12/2007

Lead agency:

á       McDowell Schools will require teachers to be trained and provide opportunities for students to be physically active 30 minutes/day

Other agencies:

á       Health Department/Eat Smart Move More facilitated Be Active NC Train the trainer workshops

á       Be Active NC – Appalachian Partnership will train trainers and provide curriculum to each teacher who is trained.

á       McDowell Schools will coordinate trainings in each elementary school (8 schools)

á       Eat Smart Move More local program coordinator will facilitate a STRETCH  program training for interested school staff.  The STRETCH program provides training for brain development to enhance academic performance.

á       Baxter International grant will fund STRETCH training for staff
